The next day, Pinocchio went to school with his school bag.
第二天，皮诺奇就背着书包上学
去了。
Even the teacher praised him, for he saw him attentive,
连老师都夸奖皮诺奇，因为老师发现
皮诺奇注意听讲，
hard working, and wide awake, always the first to come in the morning, and the last to leave when school was over.
学习努力，也 很聪明，他总是第一个
来上学，下课又是最后一个走。
Pinocchio's only fault was that he had too many friends.
但是皮诺奇有一个缺点∶他结交
的朋友太多了，
Among these were many well-known rascals, who cared not at all for study or success.
其中有几个是不喜欢学习只喜欢闯祸
的小坏蛋。
老师每天都警告皮诺奇，连小仙
女也经常对他说：
The teacher warned him each day, and even the good Fairy repeated to him many times,
要当心啊，皮诺奇！
" Take care, Pinocchio!
你那些坏同学迟早会让你什么也不
学，甚至还会让你闯下大祸的。
Those bad companions will sooner or later make you lose your love for study. Someday they will lead you astray."
可皮诺奇根本不把这些放在心上。
But Pinocchio wouldn't listen.
结果有一天，皮诺奇在上学的路
上，遇到了几个平时的伙伴，
So it happened that one day, as Pinocchio was walking to school, he met some friends
他们对皮诺奇说∶你听到重大新
闻了吗?
and they said, " Have you heard the news?
在这儿附近的海面上出现了一条鲸
鱼，看上去像一座山呢。
A whale as big as a mountain has been seen near the shore."
是吗?会不会我可怜的爸爸就是
被它吃掉的呢?
" Really? I wonder if it could be the same one I heard of when my father was drowned?"
那和我们一起去看看吧！不行，
我要上学。
" We are going to see it. Do you want to come?" " No, I must go to school."
明天再上学也不迟啊！那条鲸鱼可
不会等我们的。
" You can go to school tomorrow. Do you think that whale will stand there and wait for you?"
到海边要多长时间呢?来回一个
小时吧！
" How long does it take from here to the shore?" " One hour there and back."
那就走吧！谁跑得最快谁就最能
干！皮诺奇大喊着跑了。
" Very well then, let's see who gets there first!" cried Pinocchio.
皮诺奇飞快地跑着，谁也追不上
他。Pinocchio led the way, running as if on wings, the others following as fast as they could.
他不时回头看着落在后面的伙伴，
哈哈大笑。
Now and again, he looked back and, seeing his followers, he laughed out heartily.
皮诺奇一点也不知道他会遇到怎样恐
怖和可怕的灾难！
Unhappy boy! If he had only known then the dreadful things that were to happen to him on account of his disobedience!
