sort the items ready for recycling? But, all this tidying up isn't as easy as it looks, because
you'll need to drag the items to their correct places and
once you've cleared the first lot, you'll need to do the
rest! TIP - Try clicking on the recycling bins for clues and
remember to read the messages that pop up, they'll help

PETE1FACT: Recycling just one plastic bottle can save the
same amount of energy needed to power a 60 watt
lightbulb for 6 hours! HOW TO: Before you put your plastic bottles in the
plastic recycling bin, make sure that you take off the
lids, wash the bottles and squash the bottles flat, so
they take up less space. Look out for this logo.
FACT: Glass bottles were originally made by hand-blowing them into
different shapes. They have only been made by machines for the last
hundred years or so. HOW TO: Before putting glass into bottle banks, make sure that you
empty and rinse the containers, remove any bottle caps and separate
each colour. Remember to put the blue glass into green bottle banks. *Take care when handling glass as it can be very sharp. Look out for this logo.
FACT: When steel is made, the process doesn't take much energy. If all
the drink cans in the UK were made of steel, the energy saved would be
enough to light up every home in Britain for 4 weeks! HOW TO: Before you put your steel cans in the steel recycling bin, make
sure that you wash them and put the lids inside them so that it takes up
less space. *Take care when handling steel as it can be very sharp. Look out for this logo.
aluFACT: If all of the aluminum cans recycled in the UK in 1998 were laid end
to end they would stretch from Land's End to John O'Groats 160 times,
with some to spare! HOW TO: Before you put your cans in the aluminum recycling banks,
squash the end of each can flat so that it takes up less space. *Take care when handling aluminium as it can be very sharp. Look out for this logo.
FACT: More than 1.5 billion gallons of oil are used every year in the UK
to manufacture clothing. HOW TO: Anything you can wear or sleep in can be put in a textile bank
or given to a charity. This includes all clothes, hats, handbags, belts, and
shoes, as well as blankets, curtains, towels and bed linen. Don't forget to
tie your shoes in pairs so they don't lose each other!
FACT: Each family uses about six trees worth of
paper every year. HOW TO: You can recycle used paper at your local
paper bank. Don't mix different grades of paper, so
always read the instructions on the paper bank very
carefully.
FACT: Some recycled cardboard is so strong that you can use it to make
things that might have otherwise been made from wood or metal, like
furniture, large containers - even dog kennels! HOW TO: You can take used cardboard to your local recycling centre, or
to a special cardboard bank. It is important not to mix cardboard with
other types of paper, as they are recycled separately.
FACT: Anything that grows in soil can be recycled. HOW TO: You can put items such as leaves, fruit,
and vegetables into a special container in your
garden to make compost. The compost can then be
used in the garden.
FACT: Non-recyclable waste is sent to landfills. Sometimes some of the
items are burned to recover energy. WHAT ARE THEY?: Items such as broken pottery, light bulbs, pens and
disposable containers such as cups and plates cannot usually be
recycled.
