While the donkeys galloped along the stony road, Pinocchio heard a very quiet voice whispering to him:
车子出发了，皮诺奇听到一个小
小的声音传出来∶

" Poor silly boy! Boys who stop studying and turn their backs upon books and schools and teachers in order to give all their time to nonsense and pleasure, sooner or later come to grief.
可怜的傻瓜！你会后悔的，那些不
肯学习的孩子，迟早会倒霉的，
A day will come when you will weep bitterly, even as I am weeping now--but it will be too late."
总有一天你会象我一样哭泣，可是
到那时就太晚了！
Pinocchio paid no attention on these words, for the only thing he cared about is the Land of Toys.
皮诺奇没有顾得上多想这句话，一心
希望快点到。
Finally, they arrived at the Land of Toys. This great land was entirely different from any other place in the world.
愚人国终于到了，这个国家和世
界上任何一个国家都不同，
Its population, large though it was, was composed wholly of boys.
居民全是男孩子。
Everywhere groups of boys were gathered together. Some played at marbles, at hopscotch, at ball. Others rode on bicycles or on wooden horses.
到处一群群的，有的玩球，有的玩捉
迷藏，有的骑木马
The boys played all day long.
孩子们从早到晚整天玩。
What with entertainments and parties, the hours, the days, the weeks passed like lightning.
大家这么不停地玩着，时间好象
也过得飞快。
" Oh, what a beautiful life this is!" said Pinocchio.
这里真是太好了！皮诺奇对蜡烛
芯说。
" Was I right or wrong?" answered Lamp-Wick. " And to think you did not want to come!"
你瞧，我说得不错吧！当时你还不
愿意来呢！蜡烛芯得意地说。
But the next morning, upon awakening, Pinocchio put his hands up to his head and there he found something on his head.
可是皮诺奇高兴得太早了。
第二天一早，皮诺奇醒来，觉得脑袋
上痒痒的，
He went in search of a mirror. There he saw that he had a pair of donkey's ears.
一摸，发现头上长出了东西，他赶紧
照镜子，发现自己多出了两只驴耳朵。
He began to cry, to scream, but the more he shrieked, the longer and the more hairy grew his ears.
可怜的皮诺奇又哭又叫，可耳朵还是
长啊，长啊，都长出毛来了。
At those piercing shrieks, a beautiful Dormouse came into the room and asked: " What is the matter?"
一只美丽的小土拨鼠听到皮诺奇
的哭喊，问道∶发生什么事情了?
" I am sick. Do you know what I've got?"
你看看我生了什么病啊?
" You've got the donkey fever. Within two or three hours, you will become a donkey.
你得的是驴子热，再过几个小时，
你就会变成一头驴子了。
Fate has decreed that all lazy boys who come to hate books and schools and teachers and spend all their days with toys and games must sooner or later turn into donkeys."
所有不喜欢书本、学校，整天玩乐的
懒孩子，都会变成小驴子的。
Pinocchio thought of Lamp-Wick, so he hurriedly ran up to the place where Lamp-Wick lived.
皮诺奇想起了蜡烛芯，赶紧跑到
蜡烛芯住的地方。
He too had grown donkey's ears. The two boys huddled together and cried.
蜡烛芯的头上也长出了耳朵。两个小
伙伴抱在一起哭了起来。
Gradually, they could not stand any more. Both of them fell on all fours and began running and jumping around the room.
慢慢地，两个人都站不住了，两
只手变成了蹄子，脸上长出了毛，
Their arms turned into legs, their faces lengthened into snouts and their backs became covered with long gray hairs.
The most horrible moment was the one in which the two poor creatures felt their tails appear,
最后还长出了尾巴，他们变成了真正
的小毛驴，
and they burst forth into loud donkey brays.
而且，他们只能象驴子一样叫唤。
At this time, the driver who brought them here came in. He wanted to sell them.
这时，那个带他们来的车夫进
来了，他要把他们俩卖掉。
